Do Skid Steer Attachments Require Electrical Connections?
Many skid steer attachments will have components that are electrically actuated and hydraulically operated. For example, the folding wings on a Skeer Grading Blade operate by the skid steer operator selecting an electrical switch that directs hydraulic valves to fold or unfold the wings.
If the skid steer attachment that you are looking to purchase requires electrical controls, it is easiest if your skid steer has an external electrical harness built in. External electrical harnesses vary by skid steer manufacturer, so you may be best to contact us for support before ordering.
If your skid steer does not have an external electrical harness, we can often set you up with a controller that plugs into your 12volt charger or directly onto your battery and provides all the required switches and electrical harnesses so that you can operate electrical skid steer attachments too.
Can I Use Hydraulic Skid Steer Attachments?
Most modern skid steers will have auxiliary hydraulics to power skid steer attachments that require hydraulic power. Normally, the hydraulic lines connect to the skid steer using couplers near the loaders arms.
The specifics of the hydraulic couplers will vary by machine. Skid steers that only provide low volumes of hydraulic flow may only have 2 half inch couplers, while skid steers with high flow capabilities may have 2 low flow couplers with 2 high flow couplers and a case drain line.
If you are looking to purchase a skid steer attachment that requires hydraulic power, you must choose an attachment that falls within your skid steers hydraulic operating range. For example, common grapples and backhoe attachments only require low flow, while larger brush cutters and other forestry attachments may require high flow.

We often hear stories from our customers about breaking the glass door on their skid steer the first time they use forestry attachments such as brush cutters and mulchers. This is often because the glass door on the skid steer wasn't fully considered when the attachment was purchased.
For attachments that tend to throw rocks and tree limbs such as brush cutters, mulchers, tree shears and demolition attachments, we normally recommend you purchase a 1/2" polycarbonate window to ensure the safety of the skid steer operator.
Polycarbonate is is 260x stronger than glass, approximately half the weight and isn't prone to shattering. This is a must have item for all forestry related attachments.
