Skid Steer Disc Mulchers
A skid steer disc mulcher has a very similar look to an open front brush cutter. They shouldn’t be confused though, as a disc mulcher is a much different attachment.
A disc mulcher attachment spins a large disc with dozens of cutting teeth on it. The teeth are solid with a square shaped 4 point crown on them. This deign allows the mulcher to grab thick chunks of wood and rip it away.
The teeth are situated on the top, bottom and edge of the disc mulcher. Regardless of where the brush and trees contact the disc, the mulcher will be able to rip and cut it away.
A distinct advantage a disc mulcher has over many brush cutters is that the blunt teeth on the bottom of the disc can be pushed down into the earth to cut and rip at stumps.
A good skid steer disc mulcher attachment will be designed to throw material away from the skid steer. Deflectors to direct debris away from the skid steer is also a must.
You will find a push bar on top of your mulcher to direct falling trees away from the skid steer.
Be sure to pair the right disc mulcher with your host machine. Your skid steer should have the lifting capacity for these heavy attachments, and the correct auxiliary hydraulic flow.
Skid Steer Drum Mulchers
A skid steer drum mulcher attachment is the big brother to the disc mulcher. Typically being heavier, requiring larger hydraulic motors, higher hydraulic gallons per minute and about twice the budget.
As the name implies, a drum mulcher uses a drum rather than a disc to host the cutting teeth. The cutting teeth protrude below the attachment enabling you to mulch fallen trees by making passes on top of them in forward and reverse.
A skid steer drum mulcher attachment can weigh around 2500 pounds and will often require high flow auxiliary hydraulics, limiting its use to larger skid steers.
A quality drum mulcher will also have a push bar on top of the attachment to direct falling trees forward, away from the skid steer.
Skid Steer Mulcher Safety
The nature of high power mulching equipment requires the operator to keep his or her own safety, as well as the safety of others a top priority while operating.
Mulchers can send wood and other debris flying for hundreds of feet at high velocity. For this reason, it is important that you ensure all bystanders remain a safe distance away. Likewise, ensure your skid steer has a proper polycarbonate door/window set up for mulching.
Mulchers generate a lot of heat. Accordingly, caution should be used when mulching in areas of dry flammable material such as leaves and dead grass.
Due to the high weight of skid steer mulching attachments, your skid steer should have a roll over protective structure. As well, to protect against falling debris, you should also ensure you skid steer has a falling object protective structure.
