A skid steer tree spade lets you dig, move, and replant a live tree in one operation without hand-digging the root ball. Hydraulic blades drive down around the trunk, close into a cone, and lift the tree with its root system and soil intact — which is what gives a transplant a real chance of surviving. Skid Steers Direct carries spades from Bradco, Top Dog, and TM Manufacturing in full-size and mini skid steer mounts. Sizing comes down to trunk caliper: capacity is rated by the diameter the spade can handle, and undersizing produces a root ball too small to support the tree. For small root masses, a stump grinder is overkill.
Capacity is rated by trunk caliper, and most skid steer spades handle trees roughly 2 to 5 inches in diameter depending on model and blade size. A useful rule of
thumb in the nursery trade is about 10 to 12 inches of root ball diameter for every inch of trunk caliper. If the spade can't produce a ball that size, the tree is too large
for it — check the model's rating against the trees you actually move.
How does a tree spade work?
Hydraulic blades are positioned around the trunk and driven into the ground one at a time, cutting through soil and roots. Once all the blades are down they close to
form a cone, and the loader lifts the tree with its root ball and surrounding soil held together. The same spade then opens a matching hole at the new location, so the
tree drops into a cavity cut to the same shape.
When is the best time to transplant a tree?
Dormancy is the safest window — late fall after leaf drop, or early spring before bud break — because the tree isn't actively moving water and can recover before
summer stress arrives. Frozen ground makes digging harder but actually holds the root ball together well. Summer transplanting is possible, but it demands much
more aggressive watering afterward and carries a higher failure rate.
Will a tree spade fit a mini skid steer?
Yes. Mini-specific models are built for the standard mini skid steer mount and sized for smaller calipers, typically in the 2 to 3 inch range. Don't put a full-size spade on
a mini machine — the issue isn't the mount but weight and lift capacity, since a soil-filled root ball is far heavier than most operators expect. Match the spade to your
machine's rated operating capacity.
Can a tree spade be used for anything besides trees?
It handles shrub and bush relocation well, and it's effective for popping out small stumps and root masses where the cone shape lets you lift the whole root system
rather than grinding it down. It can also cut clean planting holes ahead of a delivery. For larger stumps, or anything you don't intend to move intact, a dedicated stump
grinder is the better tool.

I have two of these buckets. One with weld on teeth the other with the bolt on smooth edge. The tooth buckets is truly a bad boy when it comes to digging dirt. Lol I have a JCB 225 I use these buckets on and with a large cubic inch engine they have exceptional low end torque. I can dig hard dirt very easily and hardly above idle and this pushes in and gets a heaping buck immediately. Very HD buckets I will be long gone and buried before these buckets are even look used and decades before they are worn out. These are high quality industrial attachments. Berlon in my opinion builds wonderful attachments in there HD line. Highly recommended.
I got one and with a loader hitch conversion I use it on my John Deere tractor. It works amazing! So far I am super happy with it! Thanks for the product and the free shipping.
Well built and very good purchase. It beats mulching on trails or even clearing property to ready to build sites. No stumps to deal with or mess to clean up. I have worked over 60 hours with one and made several miles of trail for riding horses on . With in a few months they look like they have been there for years. I’ve cleaned up fence line covered with pines and no mess left behind. If you want a cleared clean finish job it is the way to go. I pull everything out by the roots and burn it or mulch the pile when I’m done. Attached are a few pictures of what I’ve pulled up with ease.

Looks like a huge time saver
I just picked this grapple up as well as an HD skeleton rock grapple bucket. Both of these look like they will come in handy for clean up around my rental properties. I am sure they will pickup the large amount of tenants left over property that sometimes a tenant will leave behind. I actually bought this one to load broken up cement after I have used a breaker on it. I am expecting this to work well at the jobs I have planned for it. So much easier to load a my dump trailer mechanically than by hand in fact I am handicapped and these will make some jobs I can do without hiring someone to do them for me. All the burlon pieces I have work well and are strongly built.
I bought one of these to make it easier to park trailers into my backyard trailer parking lot. This makes it easy to park my group of trailer into the yard. I am located mid alley so it is very tight to back them in with a truck and I am packing the seven of them in a small space. This one a great tool for the jod. The one thing that makes this my first choice is that it is long enough so you can turn the trailer hard on direction one way or the other. Very strongly built. Very easy to see the ball which makes it a snap to pickup a trailer hitch with. Highly recommended
I have bought seven pieces of Berlon attachments in my opinion they make incredibly well made and well engineered items. Highly recommended!
