What is the difference between a root grapple and a grapple bucket?
A root grapple has open tines on the bottom, so dirt and fines fall through while roots, rock, and brush stay in the jaws — ideal for land clearing where you don't want
to haul soil. A grapple bucket has a solid bucket floor with a clamp lid, so it holds loose material like gravel or mulch as well as bulky debris. Choose the root grapple for clearing and the bucket for mixed handling.
Should I get a single clamp or dual clamp grapple?
Single clamp grapples cost less and handle most work fine, with one lid closing across the full width. Dual clamp models split the lid so each half moves independently, which grips irregular loads — a big limb next to a small one — far more securely instead of pivoting on the tall piece. If you handle mixed brush and debris daily, the dual clamp pays for itself. For occasional use, single is enough.
Can I add a grapple to my existing bucket?
Yes. Bolt-on and weld-on grapple kits add a hydraulic clamp lid to a bucket you already own, which is a lower-cost way to get grapple function without buying a
complete attachment. The tradeoff is that a converted bucket still has a solid floor, so it can't shed dirt the way a root grapple does, and the added weight cuts into
your lift capacity. Contact us and we can walk through which makes more sense.
What hydraulic flow does a skid steer grapple need?
Grapples run on standard auxiliary flow — high flow is not required. The clamp cylinders need pressure rather than volume, so any skid steer with a working auxiliary circuit in the typical 15 to 25 GPM range will operate one. What matters more is lift capacity, since a grapple weighs more than a bucket of the same width and the load sits farther forward. Check your rated operating capacity against the attachment weight.
What size grapple do I need for my skid steer?
Match grapple width roughly to your machine's width — 66 to 72 inches suits most mid-size skid steers, with compact loaders on 60 inches and large machines running
84 inches or more. Wider grapples grab more per pass but weigh more and reduce what you can lift. Always compare the attachment's weight plus a typical load against your loader's rated operating capacity, and reach out if you'd like help sizing one.
