How deep should a fence post be is the question worth answering before you dig anything, because a post set too shallow will move with frost and wind no matter how much concrete you pour around it. The one third rule, and why it works

The standard guidance is to bury one third of the total post length, or put another way, to set the post at least one third of its above ground height into the ground. An 8 foot post supporting 6 feet of fence gets about 2 feet in the ground. A 10 foot post supporting 7 feet of fence gets closer to 3 feet.

The reason is leverage. A fence is a sail: wind loads the panel, the panel loads the post, and the post tries to rotate around a pivot point below grade. The deeper that pivot sits, the more soil has to move before the post does. Concrete alone does not fix a shallow post, which simply rocks the whole footing out as one unit. That is why you sometimes pull a leaning post and find the concrete still attached.

The frost line overrides the rule

Wherever the ground freezes, the bottom of the hole must sit below the local frost depth. Water in the soil expands as it freezes and grips the post, lifting it a fraction of an inch each cycle, a process called frost jacking. Over a few winters that becomes a visibly heaved, loose post. Frost depth ranges from a few inches along the Gulf Coast to 60 inches or more in the northern Plains, so check your local building department. These are working depths for typical soil in a climate with a moderate frost line. Increase them where frost depth demands it, where soil is sandy or saturated, or where the fence is exposed to constant wind.

Setting the post once the hole is dug

  1. Add 4 to 6 inches of gravel. Tamp it flat. This keeps the bottom of a wood post out of standing water and adds drainage under the footing.
  2. Set and plumb the post. Brace it in two directions. Check plumb again after bracing, because bracing moves posts.
  3. Pour or backfill. If using concrete, fill to just below grade and slope the top away from the post so water sheds off instead of pooling against the wood.
