What is a mini skid steer power rake?

A mini skid steer power rake is an attachment that uses your mini skid steers auxiliary hydraulic power to turn a large toothed drum through the soil.

Mini skid steer power rakes loosen compacted top soil. This can be useful when cutting a new grade, levelling paths and roads, or preparing a new seed bed.

Mini Power Rake Teeth

Mini skid steer power rakes can have a few different features to choose from.

As with any attachment, it’s important to consider what’s going to wear out first. In the case of mini power rakes, the teeth on the drum will likely be the first. Therefore, deciding on fixed or replaceable teeth should be one of your first considerations.

Fixed teeth models will usually offer a lower purchase price, and may be perfectly acceptable if you are comfortable with grinding and welding when you need replacements. This makes them ideal for lighter users.

For customers looking to use their power rake very often in commercial settings, replaceable teeth may be a better option. Being able to bolt teeth directly onto the drum means less down time and labour.

Mini Power Rake Working Width

The working width of a mini power rake is dependant on the width of the drum. 48”, 60”, 72”, widths are all common.

Remember that if you angle your power rake, the effective working width will be less than the drum size. You may loose an inch or two for every 10 degrees of angle. Most manufacturers will provide these figures within their operating manuals.

Other Mini Power Rake Considerations

If you have ever had a flat tire on a power rake in the middle of a job you’ll know how time consuming it is. Because of this, airless tires are often preferred by our customers. When you consider the rough ground conditions mini power rakes are often used in, this becomes an important consideration.

Some mini power rakes will have the option of hydraulic tilt. Without hydraulic tilt, you can often adjust the angle of your mini power rake manually. This comes down to preference when you consider how often you will be using your power rake.
